Starting this week, VMware’s Workstation Pro and Fusion Pro products are available for personal use free of charge. Workstation Pro is compatible with Windows and Linux, while Fusion Pro is designed for macOS. However, the software still requires payment for commercial use. VMware states that the free versions of these two software packages have no additional features compared to the paid versions. The company aims to simplify the supply of virtual machine software through this move. Additionally, VMware has discontinued the separate sale of Workstation Player and Fusion Player, which were cheaper alternatives to the Pro versions. VMware believes that these cheaper versions are no longer necessary since the Pro versions are now free. The company intends to simplify the subscription options and software package numbers for Workstation and Fusion. As for the commercial versions of the software, there is now only one subscription option available: the VMware Desktop Hypervisor subscription, priced at $120 per year.
