Google has been fined 250 million euros by French regulatory authorities. The company was found to have used articles from French media without notifying them to train its artificial intelligence chatbot, Bard (now Gemini). The French competition and market regulator stated that Google’s actions violated previous agreements, as Google had promised to provide better and fairer compensation to French media for their content. However, in order to train Bard/Gemini chatbot, Google used content from news organizations and publishers without their permission. Publishers could only block Bard’s web crawling by preventing search, discovery, and news aggregators, limiting their ability to receive appropriate compensation. Authorities also claimed that Google lacked transparency with rights holders. According to the agreement, Google was required to share timely and transparent information, such as how Google services generate profit from rights holders’ content. These publishers should have the ability to negotiate fair compensation with Google. Google did not appeal the findings of the regulatory investigation and announced measures to prevent future violations.
