TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew released a video urging TikTok users in the United States to “make their voices heard” and warning that the bill currently being submitted to the Senate would mean the end of TikTok in the country. He stated that TikTok has 170 million platform users in the United States and that 7 million businesses rely on TikTok for their revenue. A ban on TikTok would result in other social media companies gaining more power. The bill, which was introduced to the Senate this week, is known as the “Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act” and prohibits the distribution, maintenance, or updates of applications managed by a “foreign adversary” with a certain number of users in the United States. If the applications meet the defined criteria, they must be divested from their parent company within 165 days, which can be achieved by selling their U.S. business division. Failure to comply would result in the app being potentially banned. ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has previously considered the option of separating TikTok in the United States.
