Meta announced on Thursday that it will shut down Facebook’s News Tab in the United States and Australia in early April 2024. Meta stated that the usage of the News Tab was low, with a decrease of 80% in news users in the United States and Australia last year. Additionally, Meta will no longer enter into agreements with media companies for the publication of news or offer “products specifically for news publishers.” Meta assured that this change will not impact users, as they can still read news articles from the United States and Australia through shared links on their Facebook homepages. News organizations will retain their accounts and can continue posting their articles. Furthermore, existing agreements between Meta and publishers in Australia will remain unchanged, while there are no ongoing deals between Meta and news publishers in the United States. The News Tab was already removed in the UK, Germany, and France in December.
In Australia, the government and several news publishers have criticized Meta’s decision not to enter into new agreements. Since 2021, Australia has implemented a law called the News Media Bargaining Code, which allows the Australian government to appoint a mediator to determine the fees that large technology companies pay for news links. The removal of the News Tab and the lack of new agreements are seen as disadvantageous for news publishers and advantageous for Meta, which has been opposed to the media law from the beginning.
