Google has recently temporarily suspended the image generation feature of its AI service, Gemini. This action was taken in response to numerous complaints received by Google regarding the generation of inaccurate images by Gemini, particularly images of historical figures. For example, some users reported instances where Gemini generated images of historical figures like German soldiers from 1943 or Vikings, and these images depicted individuals with different racial backgrounds, whereas these historical figures are typically portrayed as white. Google has acknowledged the issue and is actively working to address it. They have stated that the feature will be made available again soon, although the specific timeline is unclear at this time. Google has also acknowledged that Gemini has made mistakes. In our testing, we observed that Gemini currently responds to image generation requests with the message, “I can’t create images right now, so I can’t help you.”
