Intel has announced Microsoft as a customer of its contract chip manufacturing division. The division, known as Intel Foundry, was established three years ago. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella mentioned during an Intel event that Microsoft is designing chips that will be manufactured at one of Intel’s most advanced factories. Nadella did not disclose the specific chip models that Intel will be manufacturing on behalf of Microsoft. Intel is making significant investments in its chip manufacturing business to catch up with industry leaders such as TSMC and Samsung Electronics. As part of this effort, the company is building multiple chip fabrication facilities, each costing billions of dollars.
