The European Union has officially launched an investigation into the social network TikTok. The European Commission states that the investigation aims to determine whether TikTok has violated the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) in various ways. The EU will examine whether the overall design and algorithms of TikTok’s social network “may encourage addictive behavior and/or generate the so-called ‘rabbit hole effect,'” whether TikTok’s design presents harmful content to children, and whether its age verification tools keep such content away from minors. The EU will also investigate the effectiveness of TikTok’s privacy and security features. Additionally, the EU will attempt to ascertain whether TikTok has faced DSA complaints for providing a “searchable and reliable ad repository” and whether the social network has granted researchers access to its publicly available data. If TikTok is found to have violated the DSA, it could face substantial fines.
