American ride-hailing company Uber is expected to enter Japan. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida stated on Wednesday that the Japanese government will lift the ban on ride-sharing services in April next year, allowing private car owners to provide paid transportation services for passengers. Uber has been striving to enter Japan for over a decade, as it possesses a $17 billion taxi market. Japanese government officials have stated that this change is not due to Uber’s years of lobbying efforts but rather because of Japan’s current population situation. Currently, there are approximately 230,000 taxi drivers in Japan, which is a 15% decrease from five years ago. At the same time, a large number of foreign tourists continue to flock into Japan.
