The European Union hopes that Apple will stop the practice of restricting Spotify and other music services from promoting alternative subscription options outside of the App Store. The EU plans to make this decision next year. Music streaming services like Spotify have not been allowed to inform customers that they can purchase subscriptions through means other than the app, such as through their website. Apple wants to maximize in-app purchases for subscriptions and requires suppliers to use Apple’s payment system. This means that suppliers must pay up to 30% of their revenue to Apple. The EU will make a decision early next year, and as a result, Apple may face fines of up to 10% of its turnover. This investigation was triggered by a complaint from Swedish company Spotify Technology SA nearly four years ago, claiming that it was forced to raise monthly subscription prices in order to cover costs related to Apple’s alleged stifling of App Store operations.
