Apple has explicitly stated its opposition to a proposed regulation by the Indian government, which imitates the European Union. This law mandates that smartphone manufacturers use USB-C as the universal charging port for devices. The Indian government aims to implement this regulation by June 2025. Currently, only the iPhone 15 model has a USB-C port, while all other models have Lightning ports. Apple states that if it were to comply with this regulation, it would be unable to produce as many iPhones in India as promised. It would also struggle to meet the production targets set by the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, an important project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that provides financial incentives for new investments and incremental sales of mobile phones by Indian electronic manufacturers each year. After all, the Indian government desires increased hardware production within their country. Many iPhones produced in India are older models that sell well due to their affordable prices; however, if this regulation is implemented, these older iPhone models may have to be discontinued. Apple hopes that authorities will delay implementing this law or grant exemptions for Apple’s products. The specific implementation of this law will be decided by the Indian government at a later date.
