The note-taking application Evernote seems to be planning to limit the number of notes that free users can create. A user said that Evernote prompted him with a message stating that the free version will only allow for 1 notebook and 50 notes unless upgraded to a paid plan. It is reported that only a portion of users have seen this pop-up window, and Evernote’s official website has not yet announced any adjustment plans regarding this. The current software allows free users to upload 60 MB or a maximum of 25 MB worth of notes per month.
Bending Spoons, the owner of Evernote, responded by saying that this is a small-scale test as they have been testing it on less than 1% of their free users to determine whether or not to implement the new plan. The company also clarified that this limitation will not prevent free users from managing their existing notes, even if they exceed the limit in terms of quantity. It will only restrict their ability to create new notes. Nevertheless, observers believe that this adjustment is likely to force long-time Evernote users to switch to other products. Evernote was acquired by Italian software company Bending Spoons in November 2022 and laid off most of its US employees in July of this year.
